A photobook like a roller coaster drive into the vivid chaos of street life in the Indian megacities New Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Bangalore.

In all parts of the society I could see the traces of westernization and on the other side I could feel the deep routedness of the citizens in the traditional Indian culture. The often crazy contradictions in the urban sceneries are showing the permanent competition between the different value systems. Billboards, advertising campaigns, film- and election posters, fashion images are mixed together with omnipresent god idols and historical symbols in the cityscape.

The lust for all this attractions in everyday situations is permanently forcing changes in social life. Indian Culture is influenced by the spiritual idea of Karma and this effects, that every single action in life is very important and has consequences. By taking photographs I was driven by this catchable tension, looking for all the normally overseen details and not illustrating distant ideologies. My respectful view on this overwhelming, mesmerizing and also sometimes irritating world is also meant as a statement of tolerance for different ways of life and religions.

Ein Fotobuch wie eine Achterbahnfahrt in das lebhafte Chaos des Strassenlebens der indischen Megacities New Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad und Bangalore.

In allen Teilen der Gesellschaft habe ich die Spuren der Verwestlichung wahrgenommen und auf der anderen Seite konnte ich fühlen, wie stark die Menschen noch in der traditionellen indischen Kultur verwurzelt sind. Die oft aberwitzigen Widersprüche im Stadtbild zeigen den permanenten Wettkampf zwischen den verschiedenen Wertvorstellungen. Plakatwände, Werbekampagnen, Filmposter, Wahlplakate und Modebilder vermischen sich im urbanen Raum mit allgegenwärtigen religiösen Kultstätten und historischen Symbolbildern.

Die Lust auf all diese Verlockungen in Alltagssituationen verursacht ständige Veränderungen im sozialen Leben. Die indische Kultur ist sehr stark geprägt von der spirituellen Idee des Karma und das hat zur Folge, dass jede einzelne Aktion im Leben von Bedeutung ist und Konsequenzen haben kann. Bei dem Akt des Fotografieren war ich angetrieben von dieser greifbaren Spannung und richtete mein Augenmerk auf die normalerweise übersehenen banalen Alltagsobjekte. Mein respektvoller Blick auf die überwältigende, faszinierende und manchmal auch verstörende Welt verstehe ich als Statement für eine Toleranz gegenüber verschiedenen Lebensstilen und Religionen.
